Michigan Wolverines Football: A History of Success and Tradition

From humble beginnings to national championships

The University of Michigan football program is one of the most successful and storied in college football history. The Wolverines have won 11 national championships, the second-most of any team in the country, and have appeared in 42 bowl games, including 20 Rose Bowls. Michigan has also produced some of the greatest players in the history of the sport including Tom Brady, Charles Woodson, and Desmond Howard.

The Bo Schembechler era: A golden age

The Bo Schembechler era was a golden age for Michigan football. Schembechler coached the Wolverines from 1969-1989, and during that time he won 13 Big Ten championships and three national championships. Schembechler's teams were known for their toughness, discipline, and physical play.

After retiring from coaching, Bo Schembechler became the athletic director at MU, where he led the construction of Schembechler Hall and numerous facility upgrades that are still in use today.

The modern era: Continued success

The Michigan football program has continued to be successful in the modern era. Since 2000, the Wolverines have won two Big Ten championships and appeared in four bowl games. Jim Harbaugh was hired in 2015 and has led the Wolverines to two Big Ten Championships and one College Football Playoff appearance.

The Wolverines' rich tradition and passionate fan base make them one of the most popular teams in college football. Michigan Stadium, known as "The Big House," is one of the largest and most iconic stadiums in the country, and it is always packed for home games.
