Health officials urge caution after increase in Vibrio infections

Galveston, Texas - August 1, 2024

The Galveston County Health District (GCHD) is warning residents to be cautious after an increase in Vibrio bacteria infections, which can cause a rare but deadly flesh-eating disease. "Vibrio bacteria are naturally occurring in warm coastal waters," said Dr. Philip Keiser, GCHD's medical director. "However, we have seen an increase in infections this year, and we want to make sure that residents are aware of the risks and how to protect themselves." Vibrio vulnificus is a type of bacteria that can cause a range of infections, including skin infections, wound infections, and sepsis. In severe cases, Vibrio vulnificus can cause a rare but deadly flesh-eating disease called necrotizing fasciitis. "Necrotizing fasciitis is a very serious infection that can spread quickly," said Dr. Keiser. "It is important to seek medical attention immediately if you have any symptoms of a Vibrio infection, such as a skin infection that is not healing properly, a wound that is becoming red and painful, or fever and chills." There are several things that residents can do to protect themselves from Vibrio infections, including: * Avoid swimming in warm coastal waters if you have open wounds. * Wear shoes when walking on the beach or in shallow water. * Clean and disinfect any cuts or scrapes immediately. * Cook shellfish thoroughly before eating it. * Do not eat raw or undercooked seafood. "Vibrio infections are a serious health concern, but they can be prevented," said Dr. Keiser. "By following these simple steps, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones."
