Ime Udoka to Name Two Celtics Captains This Season

October 2, 2021 - The Boston Celtics are planning to bring some tradition back to their team dynamic this year under new head coach Ime Udoka. Udoka expects to name two Celtics captains for the upcoming season, sources tell ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

The Celtics have not had official captains since the 2019-20 season, when Kemba Walker and Marcus Smart shared the role. Udoka's decision to name two captains is a nod to the team's storied history of player leadership.

Several players are considered candidates for the captaincy, including Smart, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Al Horford. Smart is the longest-tenured Celtic and has been a vocal leader in the past. Tatum and Brown are the team's two All-Stars and are expected to take on even bigger leadership roles this season.

Horford, who returned to the Celtics this offseason after three years away, is a respected veteran with a championship pedigree. He is also considered a candidate to be one of the team's captains.

Udoka is expected to name the Celtics' captains before the start of the regular season, which begins on October 20.
